Karen's design process is as unique as the pieces we create. Rather than relying on rigid formulas, we let our materials guide us to something truly special. Every piece of jewellery is born from the rich, natural beauty of the beads and components she sources from around the world.
She believes that design comes from letting creativity flow and listening to what the materials have to say. Here’s a glimpse into how a piece is created:
1. Sourcing the Perfect Materials
It begins with the beads. Karen will travel the world virtually and physically to find the perfect components, of anything she is drawn to. Every material is handpicked for its beauty, texture, and the story it tells.
While she has have a rough idea of the colours and textures she wants to work with, it's always a surprise when she discovers that perfect bead or gemstone. Each one has its own personality, and it’s in this global selection that our designs start to take shape.
2. Letting the Beads Speak
When it comes to designing, its a intuitive approach. There’s no exact blueprint Karen lets the beads "speak". It’s about feeling the rhythm of the colours, shapes, and textures. She may start with a colour palette or a mood in mind, but as the beads are layed out, the design begins to reveal itself, and it can take many forms as it is a very hands on approach.
Whether it’s the way a soft blue contrasts with a deep gold, or how a matte finish brings out the brilliance of a gemstone, she allows the materials to guide to something truly unique. But with Karen's eye for detail its that which fine tunes the piece.
3. Conceptualizing the Design
This stage, is when Karen visualizes what the piece will become. Her initial ideas evolve as she works with the materials. Some designs stay true to her first inspiration concept, while others take unexpected twists and turns. By adding a bead or component that completely transforms the design.
It's a process of discovery. While she has a rough idea of what she wants, its the final design that often surprises us in the best way possible. Every piece is the result of a blend of intention, instinct, and inspiration from the materials themselves.
4. Crafting the Final Piece
Once the design feels right, we begin the process of assembly. Each piece is carefully handcrafted, with every bead placed thoughtfully to create a balanced, harmonious design. We pay attention to the smallest details, ensuring that each piece is not only beautiful but durable, wearable, and comfortable.
From securing clasps to ensuring the perfect bead placement, this is where the design truly comes to life.
